Uploading Documents and Images
Learn to use AI's most powerful feature — analyzing your own documents, images, and data.
Why Document Upload Changes Everything
Typing questions is useful. But the real power unlocks when you give AI your own documents to work with. Suddenly, it’s not just answering generic questions — it’s analyzing your data, reviewing your contracts, and improving your writing.
What You Can Upload
PDFs
- Contracts and agreements
- Research papers and reports
- Business plans
- Government forms and regulations
- Bank statements (be careful with sensitive data)
Images
- Receipts and invoices
- Handwritten notes
- Charts and graphs
- Screenshots
- Product photos
Text Files & Spreadsheets

- Text documents
- Code files

Powerful Things to Do with Uploads
Summarize Long Documents
Upload a 50-page report and ask:
“Summarize this report in 5 bullet points. Focus on the key findings and recommendations.”
Review Contracts
Upload a contract and ask:
“Review this contract. Highlight any clauses that could be problematic for a small business owner in Ghana. Explain each concern in simple language.”
Analyze Data
Upload a spreadsheet and ask:
“Analyze this sales data. What are the top 3 trends you see? Which products are growing fastest? Create a summary I can share with my team.”
Improve Your Writing
Upload an essay or proposal and ask:
“Review this document for grammar, clarity, and persuasiveness. Suggest specific improvements and explain why each change makes it stronger.”
Extract Information from Images
Upload a photo of a receipt and ask:
“Extract all the information from this receipt into a table with columns for item, quantity, and price.”
Practice Exercise
Try this right now:
- Find any document on your phone or computer — a PDF, an image, even a screenshot
- Upload it to Claude
- Ask: “What is this document about? Summarize the key points.”
- Then follow up: “What questions should I ask about this document?”
You’ll be surprised how useful this is.
Privacy and Security Tips
Important: Be thoughtful about what you upload.
- Don’t upload documents with passwords, bank PINs, or highly sensitive personal data
- Be cautious with confidential business documents — read the AI tool’s privacy policy
- Know that Claude (on the free tier) may use your conversations for training unless you opt out in settings
- Consider that for very sensitive work, paid tiers typically offer better privacy guarantees
When in doubt, remove sensitive details (account numbers, personal IDs) before uploading. You can always describe the sensitive parts in general terms instead.
What If Upload Isn’t Working?
- File too large? Most tools have a size limit (typically 10-25 MB). Compress or split the file.
- Wrong format? Convert to PDF — it’s the most universally supported format.
- Image not readable? Make sure photos are well-lit and in focus. AI can read most text in images but struggles with very blurry or dark photos.
